Netgear router & xbox live problems

I have just bought an xbox wireless adapter and tried it out this morning. At first I couldn't connect to the network, but then after I set it up I could connect to xbox live but it kicked my routers connection to the computer.
I have a Netgear DG834G wireless router and at the moment it is connected to the computer via a cable as I haven't manager to get a USB adapter. It says it can enable up to 4 devices to connect simultaneously any yet it's currently only managing 1 at a time.
Does anyone know how to rectify this problem for me. I've tried to work out how to attach devices to my router but I can't find any settings for it.
