What is the function of the handles on the front of the newer London double decker buses that snake round from the roof to the bottom of the front window? The latest model now has one on both sides and have no discernable function.

I've seen these too and the only thing I can think of is that they are to protect the bodywork from close encounters with trees etc.
Isn't it for the emergency exit??
These are indeed for deflecting trees away from the front top windscreen and bodywork.
