do you recognise this teenage/childrens book plot

I have a vague memory of reading a book in the 1960s about a captured bear that escapes to an island from a sinking ship and proceeds to kill its captors, while protecting a young boy who has befriended it.
Can anyone remember such a book and its title

Just googled "bear escapes to an island and befriends boy"..what came up may be what you are looking for. Sorry haven't time to check it out further, hope you're successful sounds interesting

Thanks again Candled, I had seen this one myself and the plot is spot on, but unfortunately it wasn't written until 1996 and the book I'm after was at the latest from the 1960s.
