magnetic declination occurs everywhere, not just in the rockies. it is the angle between the local magnetic field (where your compass is pointing) and true north, the actual heading towards the north pole of the earth. it is also referred to as magnetic variation. the declination is positive when mag. north is east of true north and negative when mag. north is west of true north.
