Thursday voting

does anyone know why we always vote on a Thursday in this country. Am running a quiz next Friday and thought it was a topical question to include.

I think they ruled out Fridays because the workers would be paid and get drunk and Mondays because of hangovers!

Do general elections have to be held on Thursdays?

No. The Prime Minister could choose any day for a general election. However, Thursday has become the traditional day for general elections.

The last general election not to be held on a Thursday was on Tuesday 27 October 1931.
