An Audi A8 passed me on the motorway travelling very fast in the outside lane. Its number plate consisted of the single number 4. How can this be legal?

It may not be - it may be a dealers show plate and he may have been "showing" trade plates - I live near a route taken by loads of test drivers from garages and you'd be hard pushed to see the trade plate stuck in the window most of the time - you mainly see the model of the car on the license plate or just a badge - you struggle to see the trade plate.
