Was it because it was cold and he thought that if he shivered the people would think he was afraid of dying ?
yes, he wore an extra shirt on the scaffold so he wouldn't shiver (it was January and outdoors)
Plus the thought of having your head chopped off might have been a bit scary!!!

Blunt or sharp it didn't make much difference very often. If you were unlucky enough to have a nervous - or venemous - executioner it could take a long time and do a lot of damage before you were unaware anymore! There are some hair-raising stories of the length of time and number of strokes it occasionally took to get a head suitably separated from the body - and it wasn't the done thing to cry out in pain!
