I've just been thinking about this. Who the hell thought "I think I'll murder the King by sticking a red hot poker up his bum as stabbing him in the heart with a knife/sword is a bit boring"?

It was done this way to try and make the death look like natural causes.

A pipe was inserted into the relevant 'cavity' first - and the poker went inside the pipe, allowing the very hot poker to reach the internal organs without visible scorching or marks of any kind to the external body.
