sddsddean, Thanks for the answer on wall lights. Can I explain a little more. The outside light is already connected. I have attached the wall light to the wall and run a cable from the wall light direct to the light switch. When I connected the wall light to the light switch and turned it on one light came on and the other stayed off. When I flicked the switch, the reverse happened. I therefore always had one light on! Any ideas?

In case Dean doesn't see this in time (and tomorrow we can't post).... it sounds like you have wired the switch in a two-way fashion. You must make sure that the positive wires from both lights are twisted together, same as the negative and earth (if present).
Sounds like you have used the wrong terminal in the switch. Most switches have 3 terminals plus the earth. L1 and L2 are both positive terminals, but used for loops so you can have 2 switches working one light (ie top and bottom of stairs).Like wildwood says, just put the new wires into the same terminals as the existing wires. Thus you will have 2 wires going into each terminal (and don't forget the earth!)
Sounds like you've used a two-way switch to operate the lights. This is fine but you should connect the two switch wires to the same terminal (L1). I think the way it is connected now, you must have one switch wire connected to L1 and the other connected to L2.
