My first thought would be Circe but I cannot justify the courtly shepherdess bit
Circe looks right - Circle less L (Line)
That was my reasoning but I would not have described Circe as a courtly shepherdess
crofter thinks that Circe is too simplistic - and he's usually right.

Thanks everyone but I have been there and agree it is the most suitable answer but it doesnt fufil the criteria. Any more ideas ?
From this site -
http://www.zeitenblicke.de/2002/01/zika/zika.h tml

In the 1580s some editions of Alciato included a new image which was a variation on the iconography above.[55] Circe is no longer depicted enthroned, but is now set within a rural landscape in which she takes on the appearance of a shepherdess. She is depicted again with a staff, with which she touches one of Ulysses' sailors who has been transformed into a boar. An ass, a goat and a dog are also to be seen.

Can you tell me how to get a copy of this puzzle, please
The site that lector cites has been mentioned before. I think that shepherdess is probably a sloppy translation from the original german and really should be 'herdswoman' - although it mentions a boar, ass, goat and dog there is no mention of a sheep which is pretty well a prerequisite for a shepherdess.
I am continuing to think about this ......
kettlerum --- or another Aber

Hi alicia green !!
Circe was a sorceress not a shepherdess. The answers you want are : Dolly Varden and Brand. Its up to you to check them out !!! Good luck !
Thanks pea brain. Have you completed the quiz?Would like to swap an answer or two! Number 27 Arthur's friend provides pole for liner is causing grief.
Question Author
I have completed the quiz except for the "courtly shepherdess" but I'm quite willing to point you in the direction of Arthurs friend!!! Its an anagram of 'pole' and 'liner'. Think King Arthur. Good luck!!!
