I work in a warehouse and drive a fork lift and have done for 15+ years. In our warehouse we have a reach truck which I am fully certified to drive , however, we also have an electric hand truck for other staff members who are not certified for the reach truck. My personal opinion is that the hand truck is far more dangerous than the reach truck and should require some formal training to use. What are the legalities on this?

Hi, Harveypool,
i have been a health & safty rep for 8yrs, and any item of machinery, be it mobile or fixed your company are responsible for all training in the use of it. i would also agree with the statement about how dangerous the hand trucks are. i hope this helps you.
kind regards

Thanks chadwin. My boss is being an @rse about this. I've asked him to get rid of the hand truck and use the proceeds to train a couple of other staff members to use the reach truck. We really have no use for the hand truck so it makes perfect sense. If he realises that he will have to stump up for training anyway he may agree to my suggestion.
