Hi,

I will be getting a puppy soon and the breeder has recommended that I buy a cage/crate.
I just don't know if I agree with this..?
She says to use it for them during the day, for them to sleep in at night and for them to have their own space..

What are your views/experiences of these cages..?

Thanks

Hi, I have two dogs one rescued and one from a pup and we love the cage. I agree the most important thing is it is a home not a punishment. Both my dogs enjoy their time in the cage. If they are having treats one in and one out stops fights. The lab is scared of fireworks and goes in it on her own and instantly stops shaking. The shepherd goes in it on holiday so he cannot hang himself on a tetther outside the tent. They are perfectly content. I can see the arguement for them being a prison but they are what you make them. If using them from a pup you should have no trouble. Our dogs would not be able to come on holiday with us in the tent and experience lots of things if not for the cages.
My house is not spotlessly clean either and has had plenty of puppy puddles, dog sick and other niceties in various places so cages are certainly not ONLY used by the house proud although some do use them in this way if the dog is happy does it matter. I have a friend whose child cannot take toys into the dining room. A concept I find quite hard to accept but it hasnt stopped him being a perfectly happy well rounded individual.
Have you considered a run outside if you have the space these are another safe idea. The dog can also go for a wee when it needs to without you having to rush home all the time. With shelter and a warm bed dogs live well outside especially if you introduce them early to the idea. I apologise now if this has opened a new can of worms!!
