What is the maximum height you are allowed to work at from a ladder?

Allowed by who? There will be H&S legislation for employers whose employees use ladders, but nothing specific to domestic situations.
I don't know what the actual limit is but

Current best practice is to limit ladder. length to a maximum of 9 metres.

Hope this is of help, I was told this by a site agent, and he is normally correct
9 metres! That's the height of my ridge tiles. Wouldn't catch me that far up.
I have worked at that sort of height buildersmate, and I actually froze once when I looked down and felt giddy, but I did go up again and was ok, I think the 9 metres is to the top of the ladder, not a working height. bit cold when you go up that high as well.
