Yes, I think I can help. Have done the Charity Christmas puzzle for several years and have completed the 2006 one.

It took me some time to work the theme but I got there in the end. Email me on [email protected] so we can make contact and take it from there.
Yes, i'm working on it too. I have the theme etc worked out, just one or two more clues to get, and now I have the initial letters I shall probably get there in the end.

How do you work out the theme?
Once you have all the 120 correct words in what I call phase one, you then establish the 14 one-word "definition" words, using the first letter of each of of the 120 words in phase one, starting at 1A and working through to 40C.

Beware.......the very first "definition" word in phase two is very obscure, but from then on it's fairly straight forward.

If all your answers in phase one are correct, you will end up with a list of 14 "definition" words after phase two.

Phase three: You then have to find a five-letter word from each of the 14 "definition" words but once you have established the first five letter word, you can only proceed down the list by changing one letter each time.

It's referred to as a 5 out of 5 (from the setter's example), but for us it's actually 14 out of 14.

All I can say is once you have the correct first five letter word in phase three, and you progress down the list, changing only one letter at a time, you might suspect what the 14th and final five letter word will turn out to be.

Sorry it's a bit long winded, but it is a bit tricky to fully understand and it was about 5 days before the penny dropped for me.
a hint if you are still stuck with the theme bit>

The firs few clues give you initial letter which make up a work meaning CHAOS.

The last few clues have intiials that make up a word meaning ORDER.

you can get from Chaos to Order changing one letter at a time, and that will give you words from which the intial letters of remaining clues will give definitions.

Does that make sense?

Thanks oxcomper, Have I got it right then, The first letters from 1a, 1b, 1c, 2a, 2b, will be a word that means chaos.
The first "definition" word is 8 letters long and means CHAOS.

The "definition" words vary from 5 letters up to 11 letters, but the answers from these are always 5 letters long.

The "definition" word which gives ORDER at the end of the sequence is 11 letters long.

Thanks Heaton21, Can't seem to get a grip on this quiz, so you are saying the first letters from the first 8 answers will make a word meaning chaos.
Question Author
If or when I do finish this quiz do they want just the 120 words or do they want a list of all the others?
Yes, the first letter from the first 8 answers will give a word meaning CHAOS.

They only want the 120 words, from 1A to 40C, the rest, when resolved is designed to show if your 120 words are correct, or at least start with the correct letter.
Hi
Try solving the 1a, 1b and 1c then using 1st letter from each of these answers look in Chambers as there is only one word meaning chaos with these 3 letters at the start.
To help 1a is another word for good, 1b is another name for evening primrose and 1c good-looking (a word usually used to describe a man.
Hope it helps. This is my first time and I have managed to get from choas to order but have not got all the words.
