Does anyone know the Greek translation of the proverb:

"A society grows great when old men plant trees in whose shade they know they shall never sit."

Ένα άτομο έχει κάνει τουλάχιστον μια έναρξη στην ανακάλυψη της έννοιας της ανθρώπινης ζωής όταν φυτεύει τα σκιόφυτα κάτω από τα οποία ξέρει το σύνολο καλά που δεν θα καθίσει ποτέ μεταφρασμένος... (From the original by Trueblood, ca 1900 )
I couldn't possibly translate it, but it's a rather beautiful proverb, don't you think?
"Μια κοινωνία γίνεται μεγάλη όταν παλαιά δέντρα εγκαταστάσεων ατόμων στην των οποίων σκιά ξέρουν αυτοί δεν θα καθίσει ποτέ."
Sorry Clanad but I tried translating what you wrote into Babel-fish (http://babelfish.altavista.com) and it came out a mess. Saying that, when you translate the above back it's not much better. Why do you want to know russb?

An elderly greek gave a large donation to a Greek Orthodox Church and it was felt that this would be a nice phrase to have on the plaque that commemorates his gift.
