My husband says that if you are in the middle lane and travelling faster than the car in front and the inside lane is clear you can go back into the inside lane and undertake it. I disagree and say that at all times you have to go to the outside lane and overtake and then pull back in. Please sort out our ongoing argument before i go mad! Thanks

that is against thev law and it is a pointable offence!

my brother got done for this.

i asked a motorway cop once about under taking and he sai you can only undertake if your in a lane and that lane is going faster than the one to the right!! you cant change lanes to undertake.
If there is sufficient space in the inside lane you should pull into it anyway.

If you then pass slower moving traffic to your right, so be it.
Definitely against the law. Dangerous because most people don't look to their left for over(under)taking traffic and this could cause a collision. You expect to see people from your right overtaking you, but not from your left .
Its a funny situation, the law states you can undertake if the traffic on the lane to the right of you is moving slower. So if you were in the inside lane and came accross one of those idiots dong 50 in the middle lane you theorectically could keep going. However you are then technically undertaking and could get pulled over and ticketed. So its best just to overtake and hope one day the middle lane dawdler gets a police officer setting them right.
furrycheeky, section 242 of the Highway Code says that passing on the left should only be done in congested conditions.

Unfortunately it is against the law. If the police would do something about the idiots hogging the middle lane then there wouldn't be an issue. By hogging the middle lane they are taking up two lanes of the motorway, causing congestion. I do undertake if I think it's safe, if nothing else to try and make a point the idiot in the middle lane.Police keep banging on about about speeding and yet usually turn a blind eye to these lane hoggers and people driving 6 inches from your back bumper. If there are any police reading this, then get off your arse and get it sorted!

Thanks everyone for your answers! My hubby has taken your answers on board and has conceded defeat so hopefully we won't have the problem next time we go out!! Thanks a lot x
well done wallis 107!!! just driven from Manchester to Trowbridge, and these ideots really beleive they are driving correctly.........It would be far safer to have proper drivers doing 90mph than these ideots causing hold-ups!
During my Motorcycle training I was told it only applied at speeds of about 12mph or less, even in congested conditions.
Sometimes do it just to make a point or if another car is waiting to overtake me.
