I think Status Que sang a song about matchstick men and match stick cats and dogs.

Status Quo had theit first hit in1968 with Pictures of matchstick men, reaching number 7. A different song altogether than the one in question.

As postmanthe correctly states, Brian and Michael had a hit in 1978. To be pedantically correct the song was about MatchSTALK Men and MatchSTALK Cats and dogs.
I assume that's Manchester area dialect.
