took mine apart to clean it, now it won't collapse enough to put it back in place; how does it work?

Twist inside section counter-clockwise until it is free to adjust lengthwise.
Adjust length a little longer than what you need and twist clockwise to lock at the desired length.
This should allow you to compress it together enough to fit while the internal spring presses outward to hold it in place.
Repeat above process if necessary until you get the desired length and tension.
On some types, if it has been extended too far to fit the gap, you pull it all the way out and push it back in again from the other end.
