Everything was fine (for years) until recently. Now rads need constant airing and....I'm not sure if its connected, but, Rayburn burner won't fire up unless pump is switched on (has also now stopped heating hot water altogether).
We have 2 tanks in loft - one big, one small. Someone suggested airing big one but I don't know how. There is a value with open/closed on it - what should it be switched to?

Sounds as though the central heating system is not topping itself up from the small tank in the loft. Check the water level in the small tank as the ball valve can seize closed due to little use. If the water level is down and the ball valve arm horizontal i.e. well above water, the valve is stuck. Gentle movement may free it otherwise you may need to consider replacing valve.

Thanks Alan, tried that but ballcock is sitting on water line (although tank is only about 1/4 full) so i don't think thats the problem. Any other ideas, any tips on airing the system?
