My staffy pup (7 months) seems to have a twitching jaw muscle which makes his jaw twitch uncontrollably.

Hi, when does he do this? Is it a random thing? I only ask because 3 out of 4 of my dogs do this sometimes when they come into contact with a new dogs smell, My Dane does it especially if it happens to be a bitch in season...looks a bit pervy really...lol. I also have a nursing bitch who sometimes does it when cleaning her puppies! Any help?

If that's what he's doing then its the way they really take a scent in. They have a special gland in their nose (name of which escapes me at the moment) and by whiffling the smell, it is taken up to this gland and analysed by the dog. He can then tell all sorts of interesting things about the dog that left the scent.
