A long time ago when I was young I read a brilliant book about two boys who go on the run from some spys/henchmen after overhearing a plot to bump off/kidnap an old Czech(?) pensioner. When they told the police the said missing pensioner was shown alive and well although later it's revealed it was one of the henchmen disguising himself as the pensioner. Well it was something like that anyway. It was also a children's TV serial if it helps c. 1979. Would love to read it again to my boys who would just love it. Any ideas anyone

It wasn't one of Erich Kastner's books by any chance? A shot in the dark.

no, I know where you're coming from but nothing as rich as that - although we did read it at school so it wasn't that bad. Thanks for the suggestion
Was there talk of a crickrt game at the Vaxhall grounds, and a cabbie who spoke of his nippers, and a kidnapper who said "you boy eat". I can't remember the title , but I enjoyed the book,as did my brothers, and our mates . Ps. we read it in the 60's

The "you boy eat" does ring a bell although I honestly can't remember if it was this book or not - but something new to go on, thanks!
