'please verify that you have unlocked the scanner hardware the lock is located at the bottom of the scanner' there is no b'tard lock what am I doing wrong

With new scanners the light source (the neon light thing) is bolted down so it can't move about and get damaged in transit. In order for you to use it it must be released. This is usually a done by undoing a screw indicated by a padlock (or something aluding to a lock). This screw is usually directly below or at the end where the light source resides.
