old cartoon about hippos?what is it

When I was very young we watched an 'aquired' copy of ET that had come from a cinema. There was a cartoon on before the film, and it was very sad. I can't remember much of it. There were three hippos, mother father and baby, they swam and danced and the mum and dad got killed, The last bit was a sea weed crown floating to the sea bed.
I'd love to know what it was called.any help appreciated.
