If the car doesnt believe in itself, how can the customer believe in it?
They are, but it's quite difficult to advertise a car, without giving a list of statistics - an instant turn-off for the viewer, but in fact, the kind of thing the viewer would really like to know, i.e. how much is it / what insurance group is it / will it fit in my garage / how long a delivery time is there / what gadgets can i get, and so on. So, advertisers go for the more subliminal 'You really would like this wouldn't you?' angle, which does lead to an emphisis on mini-dramas, and very little about the product. Pretentious? Probably, but things could be worse, they could be trying to get you to buy a brand of sugar - the mind boggles!
They are trying to sell a lifestyle not a car - if we purchased cars based upon our functional requirements then we'd all buy Trabants (or Vauxhalls!). We all want our car to be a reflection of who we are or who would like to be perceived to be - manufacturers/ad agencies are aware of this and develop ads accordingly.

Then there must be a hell of a lot of pretentious people out there driving cars!
Ad agencies who make the adverts are over-paid imbeciles. Most of them dont own a car, dont know anything about cars and cant even drive! I know, I used to work for such an agency.
