Do You Have A Desktop Pc?

Just wondering how many of us use desktop pcs and whether they really have gone out of fashion.

I have two, both over ten years old.  I run W10 on one and dualboot W10 and Linux on the other.  Both are coming to the end of their lives and I will have to buy a replacement in the next few years.  I will probably go for a large monitor and a mini pc - no need for floppy disc drives or CD/DVD writers these days.

If you do have a PC, do you also have a tablet, laptop or other device?  Can you see yourself ditching the PC for good?  I use one program a lot, I rely on it, and it is only available for Windows PCs, so I could get by with a laptop but I like a large screen and an excellent keyboard.

Barry: "You advised me about your mini PC a while back, TTT, which helped convince me that it is worth considering.  Is it attached to the back of a monitor?" - no it's just a cuboidy thing with a load of sockets for USB etc, this is an example not the actual one:

I wouldn't touch any of the Apple stuff with a bargepole not at all intuitive.

LiK, I have a Logitech K810 which is great for quickly connecting to my tablets when I'm on holiday.  It's much smaller than yours, no number pad.  It's years old and I'd have another.

Barry I have a kindle fire and a kindle paperwhite for my books.

Thanks, TTT, I was thinking of something like this, just to keep things tidy.

https://www.msi.com/Business-Productivity-PC/Cubi-5-10M#:~:text=PRO%20MP221-,Mountable%20to%20a%20Monitor,make%20the%20PC%20completely%20invisible.

Looks fine, nice that you can mount it to the back of the screen. Looks old though still quoting W10 probably an old page there will be a more up to date one.

Mine is a 2017 13" Macbook Air and I love it to bits.  Can take it easily out with me if I wish, to bed if I'm listening to something on Audible but mostly I sit on a sofa with it on my coffee table.

Would not be without my desktop. A comfortable work or leisure station with no neck pain or tendonitis of the hands and wrists. I also have a Microsoft Surface pro with keyboard cover and bluetooth arc mouse for Hotels, Hospitals, or even in the car as a tablet. The desktop is my favoured machine. 22" touch screen monitor, backlit wireless keyboard and ergonomic mouse. It will be replaced if I outlive it.

I have a new Samsung tablet, an old Samsung tablet, a kindle Fire, and Samsung phone. I hate the kindle Fire...its quite useless. I only bought it as backup a few years ago.

I started with an HP laptop years ago, followed by a PC donated by my daughter's partner. Then a small Google nexus followed by the old Samsung. I like my technology to be portable. Much easier in a small flat.

We stopped using desktops a long time ago. I use a mini pc (connected to the living room TV) and anything that won't run on it, runs on a VM/Appshost on one of our rackmount servers. My partner does the same. We have various laptops (probably about 8, 3 of which that are in use most of the time). My partner uses linux and WINE for the stuff that requires Windows.

We still prefer the desktop for any financial and banking actions.  It just seems more secure somehow.

I don't know the difference between a PC and a laptop. I have a Levono machine which closes when I put the lid down. I use it at a table, not on my lap. What is it?

It's a laptop Tilly :)

Tilly A laptop is a PC designed to be portable, a desk top is a PC not designed to be portable.

A PC is a laptop, as is a desktop. PC = personal computer, so it's both.

Desktop Computer: PC that has an external monitor, mouse and keyboard.

Laptop Computer: PC that has integrated monitor, mouse and keyboard.

That's the easiest way to remember the difference. Usually when someone says they have a PC, they are usually referring to a desktop.

And as TTT has mentioned, the portability of a laptop.

Thank you both.

I have a laptop which is on the table top. A Samsung tablet  which I use on my knee and a Samsung phone which I have been known to use whilst on the loo!

Plus 1 for honesty Tilly!

Euugh!

Hee hee!

I bet I'm not the only one.
