Lilac...smells gorgeous

Question Author

Would it need pruning or is best to let it grow away?

Is  saw a lilac tree in full bloom this morning, absolutely gorgeous. The dark purple.

You used to see lilac a lot when people had front gardens and privet hedges.

I love lilac.  My parents had several bushes, both lilac and white and somehow it was Summer when the dining room table was polished and the cut-glass wedding-present vase, filled lushly with lilac, was placed carefully on a doilly in the centre.

Thanks for taking me back for a few moments, sandy.  I still have the vase.

I adore lilac too. I've got one in my garden, it's just past its best. I don't know if it's becasue of the variety I've got but it doesn't last cut in a vase at all  which is really disappointing.

My garden is too small for a full-sized bush, Prudie, but I have a large pot by the door with a miniature variety which is just coming into bloom.  My childhood home was very old, with thick walls and this kept rooms cool in Spring & Summer.

My parents had a big lilac bush...it just shouts spring to me. I can't remember the last time I saw one...and I don't understand why more people don't have them.

Thanks for BA sandy.

We have two, a white one and a dark one; both have gone over now.

I grew up in the shade of a Lilac, it was about 30ft when it died from a fungal attack.

Mum was suspicious, and said it was unlucky to bring it indoors.

The traditional ones become more like small trees so bush may be a bit misleading. You need a fair bit of space, maybe that puts people off.

I don't know the details but my mother had some kind of romantic heartbreak in her past linked to the old song 'We'll Gather Lilacs in the Spring Again". She always got quietly weepy when she heard it.
