Whilst channel hopping I stumbled across an old episode of 'Keeping Up Appearances'. Not sure how popular it used to be but I remember watching an episode years ago and thought it was quite funny, but today - I watched it and just couldn't believe that anyone ever watched it! Was just so, well, unfunny lol. Or is it just me??

Anyone feel the same bout any other programmes??

The Patricia Routledge Talking Heads from 1998 is on BBC4 at midnight tomorrow (Thursday) night

"Another example of a show saved by one actor, in this case Mollie Sugden."

Not forgetting her pussy!  😀

It's true that many of the ageing sitcoms have not worn well. I watched the first episode of "Butterflies" (mentioned above) recently. I quite liked it in its day but now found it very dire - despite the efforts of Geoffrey Palmer, one of my favourite actors.

Reggie Perrin (in which Geoffrey Palmer played Reggie's brother-in-law, Jimmy Anderson) was OK for the first series or so, but got very tiresome, especialy after Reggie had left S_nshi_e D_sse_rts and opened "Grot". I notice there were only 21 episodes - somehow there seemed many more than that.

But, for the pièce de la résistance, we turn to "I didn't know you cared". They repeated this a couple of months' ago and I watched the whole lot:

Dark northern humour (which for a poncey southerner like me. is priceless) with a very odd family at the centre. Again, only 21 episodes, which wasn't enough.

^^^ didn't know they'd made a TV series of that, NJ. I used to listen to it on Radio4Extra in 15 minute programmes. Very northern - ie very good.

I watched a bit of "I Didn't Know..." and was gobsmacked to see Stephen Rea in it!

20.55 Thanks, I'll make a point of watching it!

One of my all time favourites - I loved the way Liz Smith talked to the vicar in Old English because the Bible as written that way.

NJ - 20 episodes in the first 3 series and a further 6 in Series 4. Perhaps they didn't show Series 4 when you watched it.

mrs browns boys.  i simpy dont get it

Hold the Sunset was dire.  Cleese propped up by Alison Steadman, he was embarrassingly bad

"Hark at Barker" (Lord Rustless) was one of my favourite Ronnie Barker sit-coms. Only 8 episodes.

What about Mr Bean?? Everyone I know finds it hilarious apart from me lol.

I am no big fan of Bean but did laugh at the steak tartare

Snoball - I'm with you on Mr Bean.

Sorry - Smowball. I must learn to read names more carefully.

Miranda  - even still pictures of her irritate me.

And The Good Life, what an insufferable prig Tom was.

Miranda, The Royle Family, pretty much all modern "comedy".

Only Fools and Horses, never found it funny, such much repetitive 'humour' and some very predictable sketches.

I'll take Snowball : )

Cant remember the Mr Bean steak tartare episode..... will have to look it up now lol.

Question Author
