I think I may have done once.  The portion was bigger than usual and the meat had a slightly sweet taste.

Crikey!  I didn't know that.  I've often wondered what it is.

I remember a scene in a tv drama where someone called the meat on the vertical spit an elephants leg.

Yes, many times in France....nothing wrong with it - leaner than beef.

Yes in Belgium,  was very young on a school trip,

eating the saddle was a bit chewy.....

allowing for the Muslims ré pork, the osnly meat the Chinese do not eat is horse - or, put it this way, with all my travels around the country, I've never seen it on a menu. There are big regional differences - no birds other than duck or geese north of the Yangste - anything that flies to the south.... Lamb - rarely seen in the south but plenty in the north -and then there's the odd stuff, hedgehogs, snakes, anteaters,  armadillos etc that have resulted me being on the WWF terrorist list.

Not horsemeat but had camel a number of times and good it was too.

The Chinese seem to have too catholic a taste when it comes to the animals they eat.  Pangolin comes to mind and bits of endangered animals are used in quack medicines.

Shameful.

DTC,

That saddle can't have been marinated long enough.  You should have sent it back.

While I would mostly try anything farmed, or culled due to overpopulation  I do tend to get into trouble

What's that? small child pointing at hog roast..... You know that film Babe.... That's him... Walk away fast!

What's for Christmas dinner.... Bambi's bum.....  I am just not nice sometimes

Havin bought somereindeer meat in Belgium one december we told our two grandsons that there wouldn't be any Christmas presents that year because we'd just eaten Rudolph.

theshedman. Camel also featured in Turkish/Cypriot Pastourma sausages. The delis now claim they use beef but I reckon it is still used up in the mountain regions.

retrocop, we often had it when I worked in the middle east, usually in curries and the like.  Tastes good and it's supposed to be good for you.

I've not eaten it to my knowledge, but if someone offered it to me, I'd happily try it.

I think I have. There were rumours on a school trip to France that horse was in our meal. I ate it but I didn't eat much after that.

Not knowingly, no.
But having spent a lot of time in France, I've probably eaten it without knowing.

The markets always had a stall solely selling horse meat. I'd eat it even if I knew but wouldn't buy it from one of those stalls and cook it at home.

When I was a schoolboy I'd sometimes be sent to a pet shop to buy horse meat for the dog.  It was dyed green.  The dye clearly wouldn't harm the pooch.  Could humans have eaten it?

Meat can be declared unfit for human consumption but okay for animals, so it is dyed.  There has been a few tv programmes about some shady people buying dyed chicken, bleaching it and selling it to butchers and restaurants.

This was a butchers that sold only horse meat in Birmingham, it could have been wartime

You can still buy horsemeat in the UK

I suspect they could - it's just that it wasn't cleared for human consumption. I think that it's not legal to sell horse for human consumption in the UK.

Back in the day my wife worked in a grocer's shop (very much Open all Hours, even down to the meanness of the owner). Some recent immigrants used to buy Kit-E-Kat for their packed-lunch  sandwiches.
