Perhaps Ireland should ask their EUSSR masters if they can have their own Rwanda style scheme.

So the Rwanda Bill becomes law, with Britain an inspiration to the extreme right across Europe.  Summary deportation with no right of appeal, some manacled in 21st century convict flights. If thr ECHR dares to challenge, we leave that.  All to reflect "the people's will."NOT MINE - A sad day for democracy.  Will Hutton 23/4/2024

maggie, you win!

I'm not sure where the 'democracy' bit from maggiebee's post fits this.

I thought I heard on the wireless that the refugees were coming through N Ireland to the Republic.  Is the UK letting them pass through, as France was once accused of doing with refugees wanting to reach England?

There should be no right to appeal when you are clearly guilty and have no case to put forward. That'd be a brilliant day for democracy.

Well, Sandy, is it not the case due to the GF agreement that, that particular border should be open ? But no one is stopping the RoI from checking the people out at the same time they check goods to see if they're approved too.

There's a special relationship between Eire and the UK.  Irish people have always been allowed to travel freely to England.

The Irish government could solve their refugee problem by quickly issuing passports to all who want them.  The boats traveling eastward across the Irish Sea would be full of new Irish seeking a new life in the UK.

“tommy39, no because its not at war, or poverty stricken country, so thye can be deported back.”

I don’t think you’ve quite grasped the concept of the “Common Travel Area”, fender.

“Is the UK letting them pass through, as France was once accused of doing with refugees wanting to reach England?”

The UK cannot prevent them from “passing through”. They cannot be detained whilst in the UK. The CTA (see above) means there is no border control on the island of Ireland. The “Windsor Framework” allows for the control of goods passing between Great Britain and Northern Ireland, but not of people.

But the route to the UK (courtesy Schengen) to the Irish Republic has been a known method of entry for a long time. Then entering the UK via Northern Ireland is a simple matter.

Sorry Khandro, I'm not getting this. Ireland is not a Schengen coumtry.

You cant have the advantage of  an open border between NI and ROI for people movement and then criticise UK for not preventing illegal immigrants,( which they have no power to do any way ) travelling from NI to ROI , unless of course you are a UK knocker. The only other option is to intern all immigrants while their application is pending, but then there would be screams of breaching human rights etc etc

NJ, you are correct, but there was, I remember, a method of entry to the Republic making it easy to then enter the UK mainland via the North. Perhaps it was pre-Brexit.

A big incentive for these migrants to enter either the UK or Eire is the English (universal) language.

Most of them will have learned enough English to "get by" and many will speak it fluently (unless being stopped & questioned by the police!).
