How do you say it?  To rhyme with cloth or both?

I remember 50 y ago people saying clawth - men of the clawth particularly, and sloth never rhymed with that

 

and what about EA?

leaf, sheaf, wheat, peat, meat, neat, etc. BUT DEAF !!!!

I think we should be told...

I remember old Lancastrians pronouncing deaf like sheaf etc when I was a boy in the 50s.

yes - we did!

We also pronounced room, book, look and cook to rhyme with broom and didn't come across them rhyming with muck until I came south. How do southerners pronounce boom?
