I've just read one of those tik toc videos on Facebook..a little lad, possibly 2ish eating. Feeding himself, elbow on the table, slouched over the plate.

The comments I found horrendous after someone dare to suggest the child should get the elbow off the table, sit up instead of slouch.

Answers were  it's not the dark ages, whats wrong with elbows, we've moved on from then..

Another says, it's just another way to control people  leave him alone.

I'm old-school where manners at least are a priority.  Do 'you' think it doesn't matter any more. Have manners slipped so badly?

As someone who was constantly criticised by my much older brother for the way I held my knife and fork and the effect that had on me later in life, I have always 'gone with the flow' so to speak and my daughters are not too strict with their children either. I would certainly ask a child to sit up straight while eating but that would be all as far as a 2yr old is concerned.

Atheist, I'm surprised at you.  Didn't you go to a private school?  I thought

.. oops.... I thought you said you had?

No Naomi, I've never said I went to a private school. That would have been fibbing and I don't fib; it's not done.

Having now left the table what does wind me up is folk not saying thank you when you give a gift, we were brought up to say thank you for birthday and xmas presents, in fact we had to write thank you letters. We have a family friend who has a 9 year old son, not a word of thanks from either parents or the son .

Sorry, atheist.  I could have sworn ... but I must be thinking of someone else.

Naomi; perhaps you were thinking of TTT?

... or Gulliver?

fourteen, I know several like that.  Just plain rude.  I recently bought a 21 year old a very nice new home gift when she moved into her first flat.  Not a word.

No need to milk it, atheist.  It's of no consequence.

in our household, if the person doesnt thank you one year, they get a by.  If they don't thank you for 2 years they dont get any more presents.

It was sometimes #awkward when i was only sending to 2 out of 4 nephews who were brothers

I was not allowed to leave the table until my plate was empty.

Always taught the only joints on the table are there to be carved

Forgot, no elbows on the table in my family.  Nor at my boarding school.
