Good morning, MIXED DOUBLES, an interesting and original teaser by IFOR this week! Not my bag of tea, the misprints, but I’m keen on understanding the normal clues in this offering.

( The answer to each pair of clues sharing a number must be MIXED so as to give the DOUBLES ( pairs of names ) that form the entry. Remaining across clues each contain a misprint in their definition; correct letters in clue order identify a playwright, one of whose works forms the central column. This work, differently punctuated, is part of a line ( in ODQ ) by another playwright which describes the shaded region of the grid. Chambers Dictionary ( 2016 ) is recommended. )

12 Processed calories not so bad in this? Hardly ( 6 ) : ?L????

12 Fabric weave evenly plastered with oil ( 5 )

14 Aid moving slowly as well as needed inside borders ( 7 ) : A??????

15 Hopelessness; a third of income’s disappeared and what’s left is uncertain ( 6 ) ?G????

15 Subject such as this one in story ( 5 )  LIEGE

26a  Lived in Perth, able to be relocated ( 4 ): ??A?

27 Axes keenly unsheathed to be brandished in compound ( 6 ) : ??C???

5 D - 'Moves' indicates an anagram, 'missing a' tells you which letter to drop from Active...

6 D. The 'avengers' are old, Biblical. A two-letter word for Die (breakdown, fail etc) is followed by the very common word for 'otherwise', losing its last letter.

22 A three-letter dialect word for 'piecework' with the extremely common abbreviation for 'men' (as in soldiers) after that. The 'discipline' meaning of the word was new to me. though the more common 'teach, train...' might get you there.

Good morning, I'm still befuddled by 22d and seek some confirmation for the following, thanks!
1 Like VW Polo rear-ended by Golf without supervising failure reversing? ( 4): LO?O
8 Cloths pressed while covering either side of sari ( 7 ): SA?A???
Verification for the following Mixed Doubles letters would be appreciated:
15a EGE?N??????
23a NER????????
27a ALC????????

have a look here Matakari for your two down clues....

Yes your letters are good for the unclued...15a is split 5,6

23a 6,5   27a 7,4

Matakari, glad most of the hints helped!

Question Author

Thanks, NACW and roslyn, I've made some more headway and am not ready to abandon yet. Got the mixed doubles for 9, 12, 15 for the same playwright and am wondering now if the same playwright is applicable to to 23a or 27a. Thanks!

Thanks, Matakari - I'm sure we tried to steer you towards the same playwright earlier, when you were in a bit of a muddle! Hope you manage the last two now...

Question Author

Thanks, now to get me out of this rut, answers to the following would be appreciated!

16 Incense put together in pieces ( 6 )  : M?????

17 Run into Banquo’s corpse, dead wrinkled according to Macbeth ( 6 )
                            L?????

18 Backs of heads in miniature ( 4 ) : I???  ( ICON )

16 Madden, incense, verb. (Men, pieces, chess, with Add, put together) inside.

18 Inia, inside Miniature...The plural of Inion, the external occiputal protuberance. How were you coming up with Icon?

17 Lirked, wrinkled, Scottish. R, run, goes inside Like, corpse (check Chambers) and D, dead.

Hope that's enough to get you out of the quagmire...

Matakari, now that I've given you that latest batch of answers, and as you know exactly the letters that have to go into 27 A, can you not juggle letters and come up with the Mixed Double? You will also have many of the letters for 23 A. Roslyn's earlier word counts, for the Doubles,  should be extremely useful too.

Question Author

Glad I did not abandon! Thanks to the hints and some googling, the mixed doubles ell into place. Now, to end it all, a confirmation of the following with parsing, thanks!

5a      Gems no longer left on shelves ( 5 )  : E?G?S  ( EDGES )

11a    Adopt editor’s revision of story in seconds ( 4 ) : ?EFT
29a    Wool partially retained dyes ( 5 ) : NED?Y ( Answer within clue: NEDDY )

1d      Like VW Polo rear-ended by Golf without supervising failure reversing? ( 4 ) : LO?O ( LOGO )

Matakari, I'm not sure about 'not abandoning ' this -there's been a lot of blood, sweat and tears in the bits you've done!

Yes, to your suggestions - with Deft for 11 A. Adept rather than Adopt.

5 - Hems, not Gems

29 Fool, not Wool.

Perfect for the misprints, my Nemesis! The journey was long, but it had to come to an end, whew! Merci beaucoup!

Thanks,Matakari. When JJ was so helpful yesterday, I thought the themed entries would flow for you... allowing you to deal with any pesky clues!  Still, it's over now - and it can count as a jolly good warm-up for tomorrow's Spectator.

Thanks for the optimistic thoughts, NACW! A demain!
