I have this Panasonic camera and it is great. So I tried the video option and it works perfectly and I can play them back on the camera screen but cannot (tried everything) get them to sve and play on my laptop!

I can download my notmal phottos ok by inserting the camera SD card into my laptop and they show - but not the videos.

What am I doing wrong please?

Thanks

I don't know your particular Panasonic camera but both of mine store videos in a directory other than DCIM. Mine are stored in a directory called PRIVATE, with only photos stored in the DCIM directory, but it might depend on the format you have chosen for your video.

What happens when you try to play the videos on your laptop?

Question Author

Hello Barry

I tried again. Took SD card from camera and put it into my PC and it opened immediately with VLC which I use to play movies.

Played perfectly but nowhere to save it on my PC as far as I can see!

Can you see the files on the SD card in File Manager, assuming your laptop is Windows

Question Author

Yes it is Windows 10 but.....I know where file manager is on my phone but where is it on a laptop?

Apologies, I meant, of course, File Explorer.

Windows key + E will open File Explorer

Double-click on your SD card, and click on the folder DCIM.  You can drag and drop the files to save them.

got file explorer on my desktop now but does not show my sd card!

That's odd.

Question Author

Yes! when I put in an sd card it usually comes up offering me a choice of what to do.

I will check this out and come back tomorrow

Thanks for your help

I haven't been much help.

I don't know your particular Panasonic camera but both of mine store videos in a directory other than DCIM. Mine are stored in a directory called PRIVATE, with only photos stored in the DCIM directory, but it might depend on the format you have chosen for your video.

Thanks so much bhg and barry

Yes bhg they were in Private  - never thought of that!

Solved!!

I'm glad you're sorted moggie. PRIVATE is not a directory you would expect to find video files in.

moggie - inside the PRIVATE directory is AVCHD, then BDMV, then several others, one of which is STREAM. This is where all your video files are stored. I copy just the STREAM directory to my computer and then rename it to eg, 23-12-30 - a day with the family. That way you are using only the minimum amount of space on your computer and a particular day's video can easily be found. All the other directories on the SD card are only required by the camera when you want to play your videos there so are not needed by your computer.

Glad you're sorted :)

Found them in stream eventually - all good now!

would never have found them in a million years

Thanks
