Are we surprised?

Are Brummies really spendthrifts or practising being scroge in not paying their rates and other taxes?

Corruption perhaps?

send them white flags and 1st aid packs - and they could always use the council offices to house the boat people

\\Government has effectively halved the amount of funding councils get.//

So councils need to stop wasting money and spending more than they have, see my post about Bristol.

Like this.

Credit is a curious thing.

I have a £10,000 overdraft facility on my current account, which I’ve had for many years, and which my bank wants to remove because I haven’t used an overdraft for 20 years.

I’m currently renewing my mortgage with the same bank that has had my current account since I was 18 and they’ve provided my mortgage for 10 years, and yet the mortgage arm is telling me I should resist the same bank from withdrawing the overdraft facility because having that size of an overdraft facility is good for my credit rating!

Stupidly, and clearly naively, I suggested to them that you’re the same bloody bank so why don’t you just talk to each other.

But they won’t.

I find it bizarre, but perhaps it isn’t and I am naive?

Realised I didn’t answer the question - my post was commenting on Jourdain’s post.

My view is that the very last people who should be in charge of other people’s money are local authorities.

This isn’t a Red or Blue issue, because no matter what their hue they are fundamentally wasteful because it’s easy to be wasteful with other people’s money. All local authorities, without exception, are incompetent.

My local authority, having increased my council tax, are suggesting my bin collection go down to once every three weeks, and yet they’ve managed to find £4OOk to fund an eyesore that they call an “installation” in the middle of the town that wasn’t asked for, wanted or needed.

I’d rather the £400k be spent on ensuring bins are collected.

I have nothing but scorn for these people, most of whom are bloody well still working from home.
No doubt they will be closing care homes and libraries but there will be no expense spared for pointless climate change and diversity departments.

Councils are required to provide a "comprehensive" library service.
loving all those people here insisting it's a Labour thing. Where were they when Conservative Northamptonshire went bust back in 2018? Any threads on the subject?

Incompetence is not party-specific. ABers, however, are.
