The progs are microsoft photos and photoshop express and I run Windows 10.

Adobe Photoshop Express from the Microsoft Store? Is that right?
Question Author
yes and yes for microsoft photo prog
Can you tell the file extension of the file you are tying to download?
Surely it is your PC that is complaining that it doesn't know what to do with the file ?

Are you certain that it hasn't downloaded ?
I downloaded the Adobe app without problem. Microsoft Photos was already on my PC, I'm sure it was preloaded.
No idea why you are having problems. I'll think about it some more
PS: I wouldn't use either of those apps.

Irfanview is a superb image viewing program, that's got loads of editing options 'hidden under the hood':

GIMP is as good as the top-of-the-range Photoshop products but, just like those programs, has quite a steep learning curve to it:

Buen, no browser used when downloading apps from the Microsoft Store

it also said....if app already installed create an association in the default apps settings page. I haven't got a clue as to where and what they are asking me to do. I need an idiots guide. Thanks
Type
default apps
in the search box bottom left of your screen. That is the first step.
Do you see a list of apps?
Perhaps right click on the downloaded file and from the menu select 'open as' or similar option. Then you can choose what should open the downloaded file. But to know which to choose you really need to know the file extension, which is the bit at the end of the file name, which shows in a file broswer provided you've turned off the idiot default of hiding it (which seems to be an MS joke).

Aagh!

I've just noticed that Microsoft has removed the direct download links from the relevant web pages, forcing people to use the dreaded Microsoft Store app. (It used to be possible to download the apps directly from a browser).

Looking at the reviews for Microsoft Photos though suggests that it's not worth the effort of trying to get it anyway:

(The alternatives suggested above are vastly better!)
