You haven't done anything wrong. Think of the cache as the memory - Edge 'remembers' your most frequent sites and puts a link to them on its home page.
Your clearing the cache has wiped its memory.

How can I get things back as they were Barry? It said something about across all devices deleting files and data every time edge closes. I have now tried my old laptop as it had same setup and it wont even come on!!!!! its just windows logo and circle going round
I am convinced the issues with your old laptop are entirely coincidental and nothing to do with you clearing the cache on your other machine.

Open Edge start page/new tab/home page - whatever you prefer to call it. Under the search bar, just to the right, can you see 'quick links'? If so, click the arrow.
If your usual links aren't there they can easily be added by clicking on the + sign at the far right
And once you have done that I would advise simply bookmarking your fave sites. A cache clear wont remove them.
To bookmark a site, open that site (let's say Answerbank) and at the top of the page, at the far right of the search bar, you will see a star. Click on that to add the page to your 'favorites' list.

Thank you for help I need to learn not to try things myself unless sure at what I am doing. I have got my faves in my toolbar but things different laid out. I just thought would get back to what I had before. Will it stay now this way as I thought clicked something to do every time Microsoft edge closed. Thanks for help always know will get it here.
Giggsie, it is good to clear the cache every now and again, it sweeps out the cobwebs that every browser accumulates.
Everything should stay as it is now
Is it possible to drag your icons into your preferred order ?

Thank you all. It’s after I open Microsoft edge my problem arose. Buy I can see my faves but not as used to be. Old laptop back on been updating but opens with same screen as this one. Which is also different from before. The joys of getting old. Thanks again.
