For Those Who Know About Ipads- What Is The 4Th Generation?

I have googled for info but still a bit confused

I thought that the generation of the device resembled its year but I have found mixed information

For example take the iPad Pro 11 inch (128gb) 4th generation

The year for this reads 2022 yet there is a 10th generation iPad also out : /

I think the answer is that iPads (like most technology items) are regularly modified ("new improved") and each improvement is a generation.

The ipad 4th generation dates from about 2012 and is pretty much obsolete. The ipad pro 4th generation dates from 2020. The pro in the name denotes a different series.

The 10th gen iPad is not an iPad Pro.
The first iPad was released in 2010; the first iPad Pro 2015.

To confuse matters they come in different sizes
