Mots were introduced in 1960 to get many of the old bangers off the road (I know as I owned a few in my time!).
Why are 3 year old cars subjected to these tests. Modern cars have improved dramatically and outlast those produced in the 50's. I would be interested to know the failure rates for "young" cars - anyone know?
Or is this just another way for the Government to make money?

For some reason, it's four years before the first test in Northern Ireland.
Republic of Ireland it's 4 years to first test and then 2 more to next, then yearly from age 7.

Testing is in Government Centres (not privately owned garages) and concentrates on real safety issues and a simple emission check, rather than the bloated nonsense that the GB test has become.
Yes the garages use the MOT to print money. They should all be government test centres to cut the cowboys out.
Some people only replace their blown light bulbs when the MOT comes around.
I dont come across to many drivers that have blown bulbs, and I do a lot of driving. That could be because its a good excuse for the police to pull you over.
