I find it very sad that they can't sing along to carols and hymns. I still remember them all from morning assemblies at school. Of course they haven't done this for a long time, even though we are a Christian country we have had to abandon it all in the name of "diversity ". A shame.

Hi Lankeela

My version is
A bar of Sunlight soap came down …
While shepherds dried their socks by night
All hanging on the line
The Angel of the Lord came down
And said "that pink pair's mine"
Well I suppose it proves we did know the originals to be able to quote the alternative words! Although our family never went to church I always enjoyed singing along to Songs of Praise.
I like come all ye faithful - in latin - of course
adeste fideles - - - - - cantate vos proletarii !
taddle taddle taddle

the good old days -we used to get beaten for misbehaving in the choir - those were the days ! - anyoone as a choir boy do unconsecrated host and altar wine parties

sinners all of us - and we looked so angelic
I remember a few lines of a few Christmas Carols (and a few of the alternative version too of course) but I don’t go to church so have no need to retain anymore than I have.

We learned it because we were taught to be Christian at school. Young people have choice now and most choose no religion.
I did hear that the rot set in after The Holly And The Oy Veh, carol-wise.
//We four kings of Liverpool are
George in a taxi, Paul in a car
John on a scooter
Bibbing his hooter
Following Ringo Starr//

We had
John on a trolley
Sucking a lolly
Following RIngo Starr

As we got older the shepherds stopped washing their socks by night, I am saying no more!

//I like come all ye faithful - in latin - of course
adeste fideles - - - - - cantate vos proletarii !
taddle taddle taddle//

I like to sing Silent Night in the original German, Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht
It would be rather nice if youngsters were taught the traditional carols of their culture. They are, of course, free to reject Christianity - but I do feel that most of them don't know what it is about. We all grew up with carols, which gives the basic story. A little understanding and singing about Easter might help them understand as well.

Surely we should all have a common religious culture - even if some of us reject it?
