why was dave allen called a stand up comedian ....when he always sat down.........??????????

Considering he always had a glass of whisky beside him it was probably a case of being cautious. I think he just liked the stylish chair which held the glass as well.

On stage he always sat down, but a large percentage of his shows involved sketches in which he was up and about, performing. He could, therefore, have equally been called a "running-about comedian".
