We helped our daughter with the deposit on condition the grooms father equals the amount. He did. We paid our mortgage off nine years ago. I still haven’t opened the celebratory champagne.
Rent round here (South London) is upwards of £1,300 pcm and that's just apartments. There is no way I'd be able to afford that and glad I've been mortgage free for around 6 or 7 years now.
Oh; if only there was a choice!
A couple of years ago my daughter and her partner were renting a 2 bedroom in London - SW I think...the roomie paid 1,200.
i find it difficult that people get turned down for say a 1k pm mortgage on "affordability" when they are paying more than that in rent
I'm sure you're not the first to find that difficult to grasp. It's crossed my mind also.
My husband was a TV engineer for DER, then Granada when we first married. He rose up the ranks to middle management. Then the rental market collapsed. He worked then with new technologies until the dot.com collapsed. He then retired!
Only just seen your post from last night, TTT. No historic deal. The house i am in once belonged to a landlord who i did a lot of decorating for. When i was working on this house, i asked him if he had anyone earmarked for it and he said not. So i moved in. The house has been sold on twice since at auction - i've never even met my current landlord - yet the rent has remained at £75 pw. It is probably worth noting that, in general, house prices here in Burnley are quite low and the monthly rental charges reflects that.
