\\“But why are the female birds always shown as a smaller picture insert? #sexisminbirding? We need a revolution.”//

Sexism?

\\One said: “Completely agree. Also, can we do away with the habit of describing (for example) a male blackbird as a “blackbird” while the female is always “a female blackbird”.//

thats because male blackbirds are obvious whereas female blackbirds could be a thrush.

Your flippant remark, Mamy, makes light of the fact that many birds of colour feel marginalised by the use of the racist hate-term 'blackbirds', used by birdwatching bigots and right-wing types like Bill Oddie.
How do blue tits cope then?

In some birds (particularly birds of prey) the female is bigger than the male.
Brainiac //danny - are you male or female owl?//
Definitely male :-)
Yes, its fairly general knowledge that some tits are bigger than others. But thanks for pointing that out.
Aye, the Great Bustard is a case in point, looking down on those Bustards deemed not so great.

Good news about the skin complaint of the Lesser Spotted Woodpecker clearing up though.
13:36 wasn't that just a joke and said tongue in cheek mamya ??

I laughed ...
With a few exceptions most female birds commonly found in UK are duller, dowdier and less distinctive than the male of the species.
There are good scientific reasons for this. The female often has to guard the nest and do her best to keep out sight from predators so he is more camouflaged with her habitat.
Put simply it is usually easier to identify the male of a bird species
Totally ridiculous
Shirley, folk have been joking (?) that we'll have to change the name of Blackpool Tower etc for fifty years - it ceased to be funny to me decades ago.

I clicked today on a News thread, maybe I shouldn't have bothered.
Some background on 'Birdgirl':

Don't ruffle me feathers!
Followed many of her reports over the years on popular nature programmes, an inspirational young lady.

She's blipped here with a wrong word.
Maybe they should switch to spider watching, where the female is often bigger than the male , and not only that eats the male when it has had its wicked way.
I wish someone would just tell people like her to put a sock in it.
//that we'll have to change the name of Blackpool Tower etc for fifty years// sic

Does anyone else "remember" that? Recollections may vary........ etc.

Meanwhile the woman who desperately seeks attention "stated" way back, when she was very young(Greta like even) ...

""I am President of an organisation I set up called Black2Nature, which I set up when I was 14 years old and is Visible Minority Ethnic (VME) led. We campaign for equal access to nature for all but concentrate on VME communities who are currently excluded from the countryside.""
and
""We are keen that visible minority ethnic people come to take part and look forward to seeing those who are particularly interested in gardening or being outdoors.""
Calls herself "black" but is from Bangladesh. Cultural misappropriation then. Followed by catty behaviour towards the dowdy birds. Tut tut.
