Came into kitchen this morning. The window and ledge were alive with hundreds of thousand flies. All tiny like pin heads. We cleaned it all down, sprayed fly killer. Went back in half an hour later, loads there again. Had a rethink. There is a pot with parsley growing on the window sill. It's been there for about 6 weeks. I shook it and more fell out. That plant is no more. Cleaned it all up again and sprayed.
Has anyone any idea what these flies were and why suddenly appear?

Not at all, Caran. Just a bit of much needed banter which started because Dave and I got married.

Sorry gness, I missed the connection. Many congratulations, I hope you have a wonderful long life together.
Thank you again, Caran. Your post on Dave's thread was lovely...x
Caran you answered your own question; "Has anyone any idea what these flies were?"
"The window and ledge were alive with hundreds of thousand flies." Now i don't know what a 'thousand fly' is, but i'm sure someone on AB will know. :-)
Congratulations gness and dave, such a shame about your honeymoon. Let's hope you'll be able to go soon and have a fabulous time.
So lovely to read a whole posting where everyone is saying nice things.
Years ago I had a similar experience. I bought bird seed in bulk and kept the packet in a cupboard. After a few weeks thousand of tiny black flies had seemingly hatched from the packet. They weren't fruit flies, I don't know what they were but they took some shifting.
If they are gnats you can drown them in a bowl of vinegar and dish washing liquid. Better than spraying fly killer in the kitchen!
The flies are most likely fungus gnats:

"The larvae of most species feed on fungi growing on soil"
Thank you, Roo....x
"The times I told the children in school that we live in KeTTering...not kerin."

Surely it's, "Ketrin' M'duck"?
You're quite right, Hen.....x
I'm confused. The answer seems to be they're Kettering Flies and they're on their honeymoon. Have I got that right ;-)
You're right, Canary...unless of course they're gnats in which case we need to start again... :-)
Plants can be a breeding ground for pests. You are well rid of it. Buy a new one.
