I am getting a spate of scam calls at the moment so am using my answer machine as a filter. I have noticed that these scam calls ring off within a few seconds of the (personal) response message. How does a computer generated voice call recognise an answer machine?

Don't think that the answer machine makes any difference. When I get one of these I ;put it on speaker phone and a few seconds after the message it hangs up.I think it allows a certain time to elapse for the recipient to press 1 and then ends the all.
yeah I agree
i thought they had sensed whether a human had answered or not
I have had a spate recently of calls that disconnect regardless of whether I answer or let the machine pick up....very odd.

I don't think it has anything to do with elapsed time or pressing a key - "they" seem to ring off part way through my answer message. Added to which, when I do answer (by accident) it is always a generated voice not a person.
