Tangled Hair

Hello All,

I have recently had something weird happen to my hair!
I wash my hair every morning in the shower, I always use the same brand of shampoo's... depends what are on offer but normally I use either Sunsilk, Herbal Essence or Timotei! Same with conditioner! Then I brush my wet hair into the style I wear it in and blow dry from root to tip as it makes hair feel smoother.. then I spray in John Freida serum and straighten! I have done this for years now! But recently when I have blow dryed it, I go to brush it and it is really tangly... and it difficult to run the brush through... it even hurts to rake the brush through my hair.. but I manage it and once its done and straightened, it is back to normal and is just smooth!

But does anyone know why, all of a sudden it is becoming tangled? I haven't changed any of my brands, any of my routine or technique! I am baffled... it has only just started!

Hi rubyrose, its recommended that you change your shampoo and conditioner on a regular basis. As your hair gets a build up of product. Also try a deep conditioning treatment once a week. It may help.
Neutrogena makes a clarifying/anti-buildup shampoo - give it a try! I swear by it!
Hi Rubes.

I am no expert but it sounds like it could be split ends. Excessive brushing of hair when wet will cause them and excessive straightening will cause broken ends. This can make your hair tangly. Most hairdressers are horrified by using a brush on wet hair.

Just get your hairdresser to remove any split ends for you and try using a comb on your hair when it's wet. A detangling comb is best as the teeth are smoother and further apart. Always comb the conditioner through your hair before you rinse it out too. I picked that up from some celeb hairdresser or other years ago and It does make a difference I have found.

Even if your hair is long and without any layers you should get the ends trimmed off every three or four months too.

When your hair feels tangled, start by detangling the very ends of your hair first and work your way up the hair, combing downwards of course, as the tangles below are removed. This helps to minimise causing more split ends.

Your hair could be a little dry from over washing it too. The natural oils are not getting a chance to distribute through your hair and serum doesn't really compensate for this. It isn't the same and it is thicker and heavier. It could actually be the serum that makes you feel the need to wash your hair every day.

Try only washing your hair every other day. You should really get it down to washing it just two or three times a week to keep it in optimum condition.

These tips have always worked for me and I am often complimented by my haidresser and my friends on the condition of my hair. I hope they are also of help to you hon.
You could also try a leave in conditioner, and if you havent had your hair cut in a while, get a good couple of inches lopped off!

This so odd!!! I get my hair cut every six weeks to remove damaged ends... and my hairdresser always says my hair is in great condition for someone who straightens it everyday. She told me it was probably the serum protecting my hair as I put it on before I straighten! The serum isn't heavy at all. It's a light mist spray and makes my hair so smooth. It isn't sticky, tacky or heavy! I don't use any products on my hair for styling as they make my hair feel dirty but this one is great! It is 'Finishing gloss serum' so it makes hair shiny. Also I don't use a brush on my hair... I use a 'wet hair comb' on it when it is wet and a paddle brush when it is dry!

So this still doesn't explain the tangly ends!!!
Maybe the water board has changed the water - i.e. flouride or whatever it is they use to clean it. Maybe it is hormonal, but i am not sure if that would effect hair further down from the root - have you been ill or anything lately? What about your environment have you moved offices and have a different level of airconditioning?
