Very good news.
Very good news indeed!
//It was the government who stopped paying the over 75 licence NOT the BBC.
No one should forget that//

After keeping good a promise on funding that included that they provided a free licence for over 75s. The Beep Beep See reneged on the agreement.... No one should forget that.
"This means the words will be sung in the Hall, and as we have always made clear, audiences will be free to sing along at home." Er - how could they have stopped us?
good news all round
Good news! This new fellow appears to have his finger on the pulse of the nation rather more than the other bloke. He seems to at least recognise that if the BBC carries on as it has been carrying on with its very clear agenda towards politically correct leftie opinions, it is treading a very slippery slope and heading for an almighty fall. The silent majority appear not so silent any more - thank goodness! Sing up!!
The 'woke' and the 'snowflakes' are already up in arms about it - poor dears!
Are they, Margie? Good. :o)
Indeed.
I don't see why people should have to reveal their private financial details to the BBC if they want to get a free licence. It's none of the BBC's business. As I don't get P Credit I've started paying again but I wonder if the new chap could look at a middle ground, like moving the age for a free licence to say 80 or 85? That would still save them some money but not p off so many pensioners.
The BBC in 2015 highly contentiously and plainly under duress from the then austerity-obsessed govenment, agreed to take responsibility for the over 75-licences. At no time did it pledge to keep paying for all the licences from 2020 onwards.
As others have pointed out, this is is a government benefit and one which the government was, and is, in a much better position to fund than the BBC. Attempting to pass on the responsibility while continuing to fund it for the interim was a shameless piece of blackmail.
Silver Voices suggests a mild campaign of civil disobedience, which we shall probably do. It involves being vague and not dating a cheque (paid monthly) and, next time forgetting to sign etc., etc..
Haha that sounds like a plan Jourdain. Pity I've already paid.
