Has anyone got any good ideas for day trip in/around/out of the UK? I just want to do something before the end of the summer with my family and am at a loss over what to do!
Thank you,
Fiona

Please help us out with finding some suggestions for you:

Where (roughly) are you based? (There's probably not much point in someone suggesting a day trip to a destination in Cornwall if you're in Aberdeen!) ?

Also (depending upon where you are) I might be able to suggest some good day trips abroad but it's probably too late to get cheap fares. Do you only want suggestions for the summer or would you also be interested in, say, some ideas for the next half-term holidays? (I'm assuming that your references to 'my family' and 'before the end of the summer' means that you've got school-age children).

You provide the information and we'll come up with some suggestions!

Thank you for your speedy replies!
I am based in Leicester and I have children aged 13 and 16, so half terms would be great. I was thinking about something memorable and fun and family orientated. I'm willing to travel to anywhere, although maybe Aberdeen would be pushing it!
Thank you so much again for your replies,
Fiona
Sorry for the variation in usernames. I'm currently using my sisters computer and didn't think to check the log in details as it keeps her logged in automatically as it does on my PC!
Please make no comments about women and technology!

(2-part post):

Thanks for your reply, Fiona.

Prices quoted here are based upon the assumption that there would be 3 of you (i.e. yourself and your two children - one of whom counts as an adult for most travel purposes) travelling. If I should have included a partner or other family members please accept my apologies and adjust the figures accordingly.

I have to admit that I was hoping that you'd be fairly close to Stansted because there are some really great days out to be had from there. Your nearest airport, though, is East Midlands but there aren't many flights suitable for day trips from there.

However, if you've not been to Dublin it's well worth a visit. You could take the express bus into town and then take one of the 'hop on, hop off' tourist buses. If you travelled on, say, Wednesday 25 October (which is in the middle of the half-term holidays for Leicestershire state schools), Ryanair are offering 49p per person each way. (Adding in the taxes and charges brings the total, for the 3 of you, to 81.54). That's departing East Midlands at 0805 (arriving Dublin 0905) and departing Dublin 2100 (arriving East Midlands 2200). Dublin is an interesting city to explore. I can provide some suggestion if you want (and I can also tell you where to buy a great Irish 'boxty' for your lunch!).
For more immediate travel, have you considered taking the train to Cambridge and (among other things) taking a punt on the Cam? For the three of you, the cheap day return fare would come to 50.25 (or less if you've got a Family Railcard).

Still sticking with the remainder of the summer hoildays, I consider myself something of an expert when it comes to the star attractions for a day trip to London. (All you have to do is ask). For travel on Bank Holiday Monday (28 August), for example, you can currently book Midland Mainline's Advance C fare of 6 per person on the 0737 train ex Leicester. (Arrives St Pancras 0906). The 2030 return service ex St Pancras (arrives Leicester 2155) offers the Advance E fare of 10 per person. That means that the 3 of you would get return travel for a total of 48.

If you want further information about any of these destinations, just post again. I'll also try to think of some more suggestions for you but it's now approaching 2.00am so I hope you'll accept my apologies if I end this post here :-)

Thank you SO much for all of your help. Especially to Buenchico. We have booked a holiday in October to go Dublin, as you suggested, and are very much looking forward to it.
Thank you again,
