when I was younger I had the great idea of merging TV programmes e.g

when you get arrested in albert square, the guys from the bill come and get you etc.

since that lightbulb appeared above my head I have seen it done a few times.

what are any examples you have spotted of this?

and what is it called?

I'm pretty sure when brookside finished Matt musgrove was left behind by his family and then appeared in holly oaks as the big ginger girls boyfriend!

Yep Matt definitely moved over to Hollyoaks. Also the woman that owned the original Crossroads Motel appeared in Brookside at one point as the same character (this was before Crossroads was revived)
C.S.I. does it a lot ...it's technically 3 different programs, but they interchange characters now & then.
And didn't I catch a glimpse of Barney in Jurassic Park 2?
E.T. was in Star Wars & Yoda was in E.T.
They did it with that one out of footballers wives going into bad girls didn't they?
Detective Munch from the early 1990's series, 'Homicide, Life on the Streets' , which was based in Baltimore was given a role in the New York based series, Law and Order-Special Victims Unit which started in about 2001.

Officers from the original Law and Order series had appeared in Homicide and continue to crop up in other parts of the Law and Order franchise.
Back when Emmerdale had an aeroplane crash there was a scene in Brookside where a character was reading about it in a newspaper.

It was the only time I had ever heard of a cross-over in TV shows and I thought it was a great idea, even though there was no need for it.
When I was younger I always wondered why the detectives in American cop shows never met.For instance why did McCloud never bump into Kojak.
The obvious answer was that they were made by different production companies.Quinn Martin productions did crossover some of their characters,I think Barnaby Jones appeared with Cannon, and Sarge (George Kennedy) appeared in The Streets Of San Francisco.
More recently Diagnosis Murder had guest appearances by Mannix and Matlock and even Cinnamon from Mission Impossible popped up.
Over her I keep reading that Ian McKellen wants to reprise his Corrie character in Eastenders and Emmerdale.
Frasier was originally a character in Cheers, before getting his own show. Also Buffy and Angel were constantly to-and-fro inbetween each other's programmes.
