The etymology is uncertain, but it may come from either 'hawbuck', an English dialect word meaning a country bumpkin, or from 'Ho, boy!', a call frequently used during the construction of the railways in the USA. Certainly, it first appeared towards the end of the 19th century in America, where it became related to gypsies and tramps.
