I hate going to the dentists. I'm hate needles, esspecially in the MOUTH. Lots of people laugh at me for hating needles, but, surely there is nothing to like about them, is there?
Please tell me i'm not on my own Does anyone else have 'rational' fears other people mock?

Im the same as you. The thought of going to dentist makes me cry and i havnt been for years. I know that i should go as its best to get regular checkups rather than lose all my teeth but i cant do it.
Im also terrified of needles and doctors. When i got pregnant and found that i had to have blood tests I had to do it. I did have my bloods taken at hospital though and had what they call emla cream put on the site on the injection. It takes an hour to numb the area completely and i could have my injection done painlessly. I then felt brave enough the next time to have it doen without and it wasnt as bad as i thought. Id still rather have the cream though
I'm the same, though my fear is about the local anaesthetic not working. I'm not scared of injections in the mouth, but now, having my blood taken, that's another thing!

I think the fear of injections is indeed quite rational, because they cause pain, and pain is something to fear.

jipsquithesq, I'm phobic, utterly, about dogs, especially the bull terrier/Rottweiler varieties, and the amount of times people say 'Oh, he won't bite' and I feel like saying, 'How do you bl**dy know, you idiot, he's an animal and has jaws that can kill.'
I hate dentists and blood tests!! They are my worst fear!! The dentist always hurts me and I hate the feeling of metal against teeth. I am going to brave it soon and go but I am absolutely terrified!! Blood tests are even worse!! The thought of them make me feel sick and go all squirmish. I am tensing up at the thought!! They always leave me with a massive bruise and I can't move my arm. Thanks for mentioning the cream redcrx, I shall ask for that next time. I have to stop now as it has all made me feel ill.!!!
Oh god, I'm so afraid of both dentists and needles. I was told once that if you wiggle your toes whilst having a needle it takes your mind off it. It does kinda work but doesn't stop the pain! When I go to the dentist, if I have to have a needle I have to tell him not to tell me when he's doing it or else I'd just be out of the chair. My biggest ambition is to give blood, I've had an organ donor card since I was 16 but still can't bring myself to give blood. Every year I make an appointment but then chicken out at the last minute. If they could get the blood out of you without a needle they could have bucket loads of the stuff off me :-)
I don't like dentists or needles in the mouth either, but I've had some pretty extensive dental treatment over the years, so I've had to get used to it.

I'm not surprised you don't like those needles, they hurt, and then you can't even have a relaxing cuppa afterwards. But I'd rather that than have the treatment without anaesthetic.

A tip given to me once by my then dentist - when that needle's coming, clasp your hands and press your thumbtips together really hard, and concentrate on trying to make them hurt. It doesn't take the pain away completely, but I've found that it does help.
hi everyone im in same boat as you all, rationality does not come into if you are afraid. the only thing i can add is for loobie, i was told that you bruise so much because you have to put pressure on the injection site and hold it till the bleeding stops. bruising appears because the vessel leaks under the skin,
Feel sorry for me i am having a tooth extratced tomorrow :-(
Dentists that are trained in Eastern Europe are probably the best to go to. Lots of people think they will be a bit dodgy but they are actually trained not to use anesthetic so they are a lot gentler than british trained dentists. My polish dentist told me this so i let her do a filling without the needle and it didnt hurt a bit.

Well, I went today, 4 fillings.

To clarify, i'm not scared of thr needle, i just don't like it. Many of my friends make out that i should almost welcome it with open arms - or in this case, mouth.

So now i'm trying to decide if i should bother to eat tonight....lmao...last thing i want is for a filling to come out before it is properly set and have to go back again.
Has anyone noticed the second part of the question, about other rational fears that other people mock?!!
Question Author
Yeah, violet.

I used to be quite wary of dogs, i never had one as a kid, so my only contact with them when i was growing up was getting bitten on my paper round...lmao.

Lately, i've had a puppy round my house and she is lovely, and also another dog. Who is quite cutely stupid. It's making me wish i had one when i was little.

So, V i recommend you get a puppy. Then at least, when it's grown up you can get it to defend you against the other dogs..lmao.
i also have a dental phobia and am terrified of mice and rats people do mock sometimes
